The reMarkable 2 tablet has been out for over 3 years, so when are we going to see the reMarkable 3? And what features would we love to see on a new device from this amazing company? Learn more below.

What is the reMarkable platform?
The reMarkable 2 is a digital notebook that leverages an e-ink screen and EMR technology to provide a paper-like writing experience. The tablet pairs wirelessly with a powerful backend that synchronizes documents to the Connect cloud. The simple operating system is perfect for focusing on the task at hand (minimizing distraction) and allows easy organization into folders. Additionally, the optional Type Folio transforms the reMarkable 2 into a distraction typing platform.
What features would we love to see in the reMarkable 3?
While I love using my reMarkable 2 and the associated suite of Connect software, the past three years have inspired a list of features that I would LOVE to see on the reMarkable 3. The below list of requested features would improve the reMarkable experience, but are not major impediments to get huge value from the current generation device.
Requested reMarkable 3 device features
- Improved WiFi connectivity – the current reMarkable 2 only supports 2.4 GHz WiFi, meaning that it can’t take easily advantage of iPhone hotspots or other older hotspots. It would be great to update this to the ability to connect to 5.0 GHz WiFi. Instructions on connection to iPhone hotspot here.
- Backlight – I love the e-ink display on the current generation tablet, but when traveling, I find myself wishing it had some level of back lighting. This would be SUPER helpful when on a darkened flight or during a presentation.
- Hardened stylus – I’ve broken my share of styli from clumsy, short drops onto hard surfaces (so much so that I carry a Digital Jumbo as a backup). I’d love to see reMarkable harden the vulnerable nib holder on the Marker and Marker Plus to be more durable.
- WiFi toggle switch – I toggle my reMarkable 2 between airplane and standard mode quite often (primarily to increase battery life). I would love to see a physical toggle switch (similar to the iPhone ringer on/off switch) to make this happen without having to leave a notebook.
- Encryption / finger unlock – I use my reMarkable for almost everything and consequently it has a number of sensitive documents on it. But I find the current passcode system clunky and the lack of device-level encryption is an issue. I would really enjoy a fingerprint unlock button to increase to security of my documents and fully encrypted storage.
- Expanded memory – The current reMarkable has 8GB of internal storage (interestingly the same as the first gen reMarkable). It seems like a no-brainer to at least double the storage to 16GB to ensure that users don’t have to delete documents (which can really stack up if you use Read on reMarkable).
- Wireless charger – This might be a bit controversial (especially considering the long battery life), but it would be super convenient to have a wireless charger on the next gen reMarkable. This would allow it to take advantage of the myriad of wireless chargers available today.
Requested reMarkable 3 software / firmware features:
- Handwriting recognition that allows symbols – I really love the new straight line feature that was released in the v3.8 update, but it made me wish that there was a stylus gesture to make arrows. I find that I use arrows quite a bit during my daily note taking and they are generally pretty ugly. I would love to have a cleaner way to connect two sections on a notebook page.
- Optional stickers (arrows) – I would love an icon that has ready made icons / stickers that can be pasted on notes to give it life or provide emphasis. These could be symbols like a star, a large arrow, or boxes that could be written on (layered) for take aways.
- Improved search of handwritten notes and PDFs – The current device-level search functionality is notoriously limited to titles and tags. It would be amazing if the search bar allowed you to find typed and converted handwritten notebooks (or digitally printed PDFs) from a single place.
- Ability to cut & paste pictures / graphics – I would love to be able to snip (think Windows screen shot) text or a graphic from a PDF or ebook and then copy it into a notebook. This would allow better notetaking.
Future reMarkable Connect improvements
- Ability to search on my.remarkable.com – the current web application does not have a search function (though the desktop & mobile applications do). Adding a search functionality would increase the usefulness of the website (especially when installing an application isn’t possible [e.g., work computer)].
- View notebooks and documents on reMarkable Connect – Unfortunately, you cannot open (much less modify) a notebook or PDF on the Connect website. This is a serous shortcoming for the website and should be fixed immediately.
When will the reMarkable 3 be released?
As of this writing, we don’t have any information on a reMarkable 3 release date. reMarkable did hire a new CEO (Philip Hess from Bose) in December 2023, leading to rumors that a new hardware release wouldn’t be anytime soon. As soon as we know something, we’ll post it here!

reMarkable 3 September 2024 Update
Instead of branding their new tablet as the reMarkable 3, reMarkable has chosen to call the new tablet the reMarkable Paper Pro, This new model features many of the hardware requests that users were looking for (e.g., color, backlighting) but doesn’t include many of the software updates (yet).
