Learn how to change the tip on a reMarkable 2 Marker or Marker Plus to maximize your writing experience. The reMarkable 2 digital notebook is an incredible tool for consultants  and executives because it packs so much capability into a small package.  And it writes like using a pen on paper – an experience that requires a stylus / marker with a tip that wears down over time.  But what is a reMarkable 2 user to do when the tip begins to wear?  Learn more below.

What qualifies me to discuss changing the tip of a reMarkable Marker?

reMarkable 2 marker tips wear out over time - compare what a new tip (bottom) looks like vs an older tip (top)

I am an active user of the reMarkable 2 and have been using it daily for over 2 years now. The reMarkable 2 is an invaluable tool for modern business people.  It’s significantly different than a laptop or traditional tablet (e.g., iPad) because it’s focused on one specific activity – writing.  I love that the reMarkable 2 allows me to focus on thinking deeply or focusing on the situation at hand.  I’ve used and tested a number of reMarkable stylus over the past few years and have performed many tip changes on my styli. I’ve also tested a number of different OEM and non-OEM EMR pencils on the reMarkable 2.

How to know if your reMarkable tip is beginning to wear out?

The biggest indicator that the tip of your reMarkable Marker is beginning to wear is inconsistency with the recording on your reMarkable 2.  This inconsistency could be in the form of distance between your Marker tip and the recording on the tablet or the recorded notes skipping around.  Additionally, you may notice that a lag time between pen location and recording on the reMarkable 2 tablet if your tip is worn.

A secondary method for realizing that your reMarkable 2 Marker tip is wearing down is a visual inspection of the tip.  You’ll notice that the tip may feel sharper, but looking closely (with magnification unless you have eagle eyes) at the tips will reveal a difference once worn.

Finally, interval based maintenance an be effective for keeping a fresh tip on your reMarkable Marker. Depending on how hard you press, changing the tip every 2 weeks or monthly can work great. I find setting the first day of the month as an easy date to remember works well.

Changing the reMarkable Marker tip

Changing the tip on your reMarkable 2 marker is incredible easy.  Start by locating the business card full of new tips that shipped with your reMarkable Marker.  If you’ve lost that (or used up all of the nubs), skip down to the next section for where to buy more.

Remove the worn reMarkable tip from the marker stylus

Remove the old reMarkable Marker tip

Once you’ve located the card, insert the nub into the removal section (looks like a rounded triangle) at the larger side.  Slide the Marker from right to left, until the tip gets wedged in the smaller section of the removal tool.  Once the nub is stuck, pull back gently away from the card to expose the shaft of the nub.  Continue pulling back until the entire nub has been removed from the Marker

Insert a new reMarkable Marker nib

Once you remove the worn nub (and thrown it away), flip the reMarkable business card over and squeeze on the long ends of the card.  This will force the ends of the new nibs (exposing them for insertion to the Marker).  Select a new nub and then fully slide the shaft into the Marker until it is seated in the Marker.  Pull the seated tip away from the business card and you’re set to get back to your reMarkable 2.  You may want to ensure that the nub is fully seated by gently pressing on the nub to ensure it’s all the way in.

How do I charge my reMarkable 2 Marker?

You don’t need to charge your reMarkable Marker! The reMarkable marker does not require any charging at all because it uses EMR technology!  If your writing experience has been degraded, your first step should be to replace the nib on your marker (see above).  If after you change the tip of your reMarkable stylus and your tablet is still malfunctioning, it may be time to cycle the power or clear the tablet to remove any surface grime with a wet paper towel or Alibeiss lens cleaning wipes.
