The reMarkable 2 is the perfect business travel tool to stay organized while on the move. But you need reMarkable Connect to fully utilize your device – so what is a traveler to do when they aren’t on their home or corporate wifi network?

Why qualifies me to talk about using the reMarkable while traveling?
I travel a few times a month for work and I’ve been using the reMarkable 2 for 2+ years in my business roles. I am constantly trying to problem solve and optimize to make my business technology make my life easier and more impactful.
Advantages of using the reMarkable while traveling
I love using my reMarkable 2 while traveling. I primarily use the notebook feature to keep various projects / work streams organized, but I’ve also branched out into other activities. Three additional functions that I use on my reMarkable 2 while traveling are:
- Signing documents on the move
- Reviewing / marking up Power Point slides
- Reading ebooks
- Screen share with large monitors or remote users
Why is it important to synchronize your reMarkable 2 with Connect?
- Backup your notes
- Bring documents to read (e.g., Powerpoint presentation or ebooks)
- Bring documents to sign
- Send documents by email
- Sync document markups to your desktop app
- Screen share
Options for syncing your reMarkable 2 tablet while traveling
There are three major options for synchronizing your reMarkable 2 tablet with the desktop app. Full sync requires a reMarkable Connect subscription, though there are some limited functions you can access without Connect. Connection options include:
- Use smart phone hotspot to sync reMarkable when traveling
- Use USB connection to sync reMarkable when off wifi
- Connect reMarkable to a new wifi network
**Note: your reMarkable must be out of airplane mode with WIFI turned on. See this article for details on how to turn your WIFI on.
Option 1 – use smart phone hotspot to sync reMarkable when traveling
This is my primarily method for syncing my reMarkable on the move. The main advantages are that (1) once you have it set up, it’ll be super easy and (2) I control the wifi network so I feel it’s secure.
To activate the hotspot on an iPhone, click on Settings and then to “Personal Hotspot.” If this option does not exist (should be below Cellular on the Settings menu), you may need to contact your carrier to enable it.
Once in the Personal Hotspot menu, you’ll need to turn the hotspot on, set a password, and enable “Maximize Compatibility.” The last step is really important as the reMarkable will not connect without this setting (needs to be on 2.4GHz WiFi).
Once your hotspot is operating, grab your reMarkable and open the Menu (denoted by the three-line ‘hamburger’ in the corner) and click settings. Then click on Wi-Fi and look for your phone’s network name (mine was called iPhone(50) in the example below). Once you type in the password for the network, you should be all set!
Note: using your smart phone as a hot spot can be a drain on battery life. I like using a Magsafe battery while traveling to keep my iPhone charged while on the move.
Option 2 – use USB connection to sync reMarkable when off WiFi
The reMarkable can leverage a computer’s internet connection if you can’t or don’t want to connect the reMarkable to a wifi network. This is done with a USB C cable (same as for charging).
- Connect the reMarkable 2 with a USB-C cable to your computer.
- Click “settings” button on reMarkable (the gear)
- Click storage.
- Find option Enable USB web interface and click.
- Open a browser window on your computer and enter the address 10.11.99.1.
Option 3 – connect reMarkable to a new WIFI network (be careful)
A third option is to connect to a new wifi network in order to synchronize between your tablet and reMarkable Connect.
To connect to a new network – take your reMarkable 2and open the Menu (denoted by the three-line ‘hamburger’ in the corner). Then click settings (has the small gear). Then click on Wi-Fi and look for the network you’d like to connect to. I would use this as a backup, unless you trust the network you’re connecting to. reMarkable Connect data is encrypted in transit, but there are too many spoofing networks out there.
