Templates on the reMarkable 2 can increase your productivity and really dial in the usefulness of a specific notebook.
What is the reMarkable 2?
The reMarkable 2 is an e-ink tablet that prides itself on simplicity. The device allows the user to create multi-page notebooks as well as markup EPUBs and PDFs (which can be created from PowerPoint presentations). This experience provides a distraction free writing environment, but also has WiFi synchronization and handwriting to text conversion.
We’ve written about how to use the reMarkable in general business contexts, as well as specifically in management consulting. My favorite use for the reMarkable is to organize my daily agenda and to-do list.
What templates are built into the reMarkable 2?
The reMarkable includes 47 native templates that are built into every notebook page. reMarkable organizes these into four main categories – Creative, Grids, Life/organize, and Lines.
- Creative – this includes templates optimizes for visual art (e.g., perspective and isometric) as well as for music (e.g., guitar chords and standard music scales)
- Grids – the name here is pretty explanatory. This category also includes dot templates as well as some grid and hexagon types
- Life/organize – this category is a catch all of storyboards and planners (primarily weekly). There are what I would most classify as productivity templates.
- Lines – these templates mimic standard US notebook types, including legal, small & large lined, and Cornell style
How to use native templates on the reMarkable 2?
There are two ways to set the background templates – when creating a new reMarkable Notebook or once the notebook has been created.
Set template during notebook creation
Setting the template for a reMarkable notebook at the creation is the easiest way to set it for use.
To get started, click the new v3.12 widget create button (the floating + sign on your home screen) and select notebook
Then fill out the notebook name and set the Notebook cover option. We’re big fans of ‘first page’ to make it easier to find later.
Then make your way to the bottom of the screen and select one of your recently used templates from the library. If you don’t see one you want, click “View All” to see all 47 different templates.
Pro Tip: you can filter the template types with the four buttons along the top of the screen
Select a template and you’re done!
The background you’ve selected will now be the default for all new pages created. To change individual pages, see the instructions below.
Editing the background template once the notebook has been created
Once you’ve created a notebook but want to change the background for a specific page, you’ll need to follow the below process.
Open the side menu (will be in top left or right depending on your tablet’s configuration)
Click on the Layers icon (stacked pages)
Click Template
Select the new template (just like the process above)

How do I use external templates on the reMarkable 2?
To use an external template, like the above PDFs, you’ll upload them through my.remarkable.com or through one of the apps (desktop or mobile). Once the format is on your reMarkable, you can duplicate the file to make a new copy or just start writing on that copy.
Duplicate a whole PDF file on a reMarkable 2
To duplicate a PDF on your reMarkable, long press on the PDF cover to access the top menu. From there, click the “Duplicate” icon (two squares with a plus symbol). This will create a second copy of the PDF.
Duplicate a single page from a PDF on the reMarkable 2
To duplicate a single page (or multiple pages) from a PDF template, open the page and then the side menu. Click the pages view (four small squares) and then long hold the pages you want to duplicate. This will open the top menu and you can click duplicate.
This technique is great for our Monthly planner to create additional pages.

At this time, there isn’t a way to edit templates for multiple pages (once a notebook has been created)
