Why read this reMarkable guide?

I’ve been using the reMarkable 2 for over three years in my professional and personal lives. During that time, I’ve worked as a consultant, business executive, and just dad of a busy family. I am a huge believer that the reMarkable 2 can help you unlock your goals and just simplify your working life.

reMarkable icon locations – Menu, Settings, Notes Menu (Tool Bar)

Icons are found all over the reMarkable and once you understand what they are used for, will make navigating the tablet much easier. This is really important because if you are using the reMarkable for professional productivity, you need to be able to navigate it efficiently.

Trash – if you’ve recently deleted notebooks or PDFs, you’ll find them with this icon
Guides – Guides are designed to teach you how to use your reMarkable. From actual guides to the toggle for “Tool Tips” (the pop up boxes that explain how reMarkable features work), this icon is great for new reMarkable users.
Settings – This little gear takes you to the reMarkable settings menu. Detailed explanation below.

reMarkable Settings Icons

The last selection on the main menu is settings, where you can modify how your device is behaving (e.g., wifi setting, software update, security). These icons are access through the main menu and clicking on the settings gear icon.

From the storage screen, you can also force your reMarkable 2 to sync with reMarkable connect.
Security icon on the reMarkable 2 paper tabletSecurity – the security icon allows you to turn on/off the security pass code option.
Accessibility icon on the reMarkable 2 paper tabletAccessibility – the final icon in settings takes you to a few helpful options to optimize your reMarkable for your personal situation. Most importantly, you can toggle between left and right handed mode (which modes the in-note menu between sides). Additionally, you can chose a larger font if seeing typed text is difficult for you.

reMarkable Notes Menu Icons (known as Tool Bar)

These icons are found on the left (or right, if you’re a lefty like me) side of the screen while accessing a reMarkable notebook.

Open close reMarkable 2 tool barOpen / Close Tool Bar Toggle – this icon is used for hiding the notes menu or expanding it to make changes while in a notebook. This is a very important tool because it keeps your hand from accidently touching a menu button.
Pen type icon on the reMarkable 2Stylus – use this icon to put your reMarkable into writing mode or to change your pen types / colors / thickness
Text or typing icon for the reMarkable 2 paper tabletType – use this icon to put your reMarkable into typing mode. This is best for using your Type Folio (detailed review here).
Erase icon for the reMarkable 2 paper tabletErase – This function allows you to put your reMarkable into erase mode (especially helpful if you don’t have a Marker Plus w/ build in eraser). You can also pick erase types like area erase and erase whole page.
Select (copy/cut/paste) – the select tool is used to highlight a section of text or drawing that you’d like to cut or paste. Once you’ve selected that region, you can navigate to any other note and cut or paste it to the new location.
Undo – this reMarkable icon allows you to instantly remove the last pen stroke that you made. Expert tip – you can use the two finger tap gesture for undo.
Redo – this icon allows you to replace a stroke that you previously undid. These functions are very similar to how undo and redo work in Microsoft Office
Page overview (view) – this reMarkable icon provides a zoomed out view where you can see 10+ pages from your notebook. This can be very useful if you want to quickly navigate to a different page or change the order of pages
Tags icon on reMarkable 2Tag menu – the tag icon shows you the current tags for your notebook (super helpful when you want to search for it later) or add new tags to the notebook
Layers icon for the reMarkable 2 paper tabletLayers – the layers icon shows you the current layers on that note page (e.g., template, text, writing). It allows you to add or navigate between layers. This is my most underused feature on this menu set, as I use my reMarkable 2 for business tasks.
Export and share icon for the reMarkable 2 paper tabletShare (reMarkable calls this Export and Share)- the sharing icon allows you to screen share, send by email, and convert handwriting to text. Click the links for details on each of these tasks
Document settings (notebook) for the reMarkable 2 paper tabletNotebook settings – this icon allows you to change notebook level settings, as well as transition between landscape and portrait view. From this view, you can also perform a search inside the notebook (this only works for typed text or handwriting you converted to text)
