Powerpoint on the reMarkable 2 paper tablet
One of the best features of the reMarkable2 digital tablet is it’s ability to display and edit Powerpoint presentations. I saw this feature on the original Remarkable tablet and it instantly made the idea of printing out board decks (aka board books) arcane. But how does one get a PPT or PPTX file from their laptop or email onto their Remarkable? There are actually a couple methods that we’ll discuss in this article:
- The export to PDF method for sharing a Powerpoint presentation with your reMarkable
- The new reMarkable “read on reMarkable” method (requires MS Office Add In)
What is the Remarkable 2?
The reMarkable2 is a digital notebook (also referred to as a paper tablet) that was created by the tech startup reMarkable and is billed as “the world’s thinnest tablet.” The screen’s high-friction surface, combined with a replaceable tip stylus, results in a writing experience that’s surprisingly similar to paper. The majors difference between the Remarkable two and a standard Moleskin notebook include wireless syncing, ability to organize notebooks, and the ability to import / edit digital documents.
How do you get a Power Point presentation onto your Remarkable 2?
There are three major steps to getting a Powerpoint deck from a computer onto the Remarkable 2 digital tablet. Later on, we’ll go through each step in detail.
- Convert the presentation from Powerpoint into a PDF
- Add the PDF to your Remarkable Connect
- Sync the PDF from the Remarkable Connect onto the tablet
Method 1: Export Powerpoint to PDF and share to reMarkable 2 tablet
The export to PDF method is the most straight forward way of sharing a Powerpoint presentation (or Keynote presentation) to your reMarkable. It requires a couple extra steps (compared to the Add In method at bottom), but it does not require any additional software.
Convert Powerpoint presentation into PDF file
Once you have a presentation that you’d like to export to PDF, save the presentation as usual and then click on file in the top left. Then, click on export ( second from the bottom) and select “Create PDF/XPS Document.”
This will queue you to select a location to save the new document as well as to name it. Additionally, you can click “Options” to further refine how your Power Point presentation is exported (e.g., whole presentation vs selection, include / exclude hidden slides). Click save and you’re done with this portion!
Add Power Point PDF to reMarkable Connect
Once you have a PDF copy of your presentation, it’s incredibly easy to move the presentation onto your reMarkable 2 paper tablet. If you have installed the reMarkable App, all you need to do is open the app and then navigate to the folder where you want to drop the presentation.
Pro tip: create a folder specifically for presentations or a certain project to make it easy to find on your device
Sync the PDF from Connect to the reMarkable 2
Once you connect your reMarkable 2 to a wifi network, your files will update from the cloud.
If you keep your wifi off as a default (great way to maximize battery life), you’ll need to click on the Menu “hamburger” in the top left corner of your reMarkable 2. From there, look all the way at the bottom for the “Settings” gear and click it. Then press the “Wifi” icon and turn your tablet’s wifi. If you’re near a network that you’ve previously connected to, everything else should be automatic. If not, you’ll need to select a network and input the password.
If your tablet isn’t syncing, click on the “Storage” icon (it looks like a filing cabinet) and then click “Check sync” to force your reMarkable 2 to look for new documents.
Check out this article if you’re having issues with syncing or want to learn how to sync your reMarkable 2 when off your home wifi.
Method 2: Share Powerpoint with Read on reMarkable add in
If you’ve already installed the MS Office plugin for reMarkable and are connected to the internet, all you need to do is click the “Read on reMarkable” button on your tool bar. You’ll be prompted to sign in to your reMarkable Connect account and you should be good to go!
Can’t install the reMarkable MS Add In? Do not fear, the first method (export to PDF) will work just fine. Or check out this article for additional information on exporting Powerpoint to your reMarkable tablet.
How to markup your Power Point PDF on reMarkable 2 tablet
Marking up a Power Point presentation on a reMarkable 2 is super easy. Select the pen you want to use and get to work. A couple tips:
- Select a pen other than black (I like black or red) so when you export the file, your markups will pop off the page
- If your PDF is not filling the entire screen, click the folded page icon (very bottom of the menu bar) and then click “set to landscape)
- Email your presentation using the “Send by email” button (second from the bottom), which will include your markups. Make sure to select all pages, if you want to send the entire presentation to someone.
