Why should you be interested in this post on the reMarkable 2 software update?

I’ve been using the reMarkable 2 paper tablet for the past three years and have been along for the entire journey of rolling out new features. As the owner of EffectivExec, I’m constantly testing out the new updates and seeing how well they perform in the ‘wild.’

What is the reMarkable 2?

The reMarkable 2 is a digital writing tool that is designed to maximize organization and focus. Both of these attributes are essential to the modern business person and are in short supply in today’s world of distractions. The reMarkable tablet connects to a cloud platform that provides handwriting conversion, backup, and the ability to securely upload documents. The reMarkable also pairs with the Type Folio to provide a distraction free experience.

What did reMarkable release in this software update?

reMarkable released the v3.10 update in mid-March 2024 to regular users. This followed the minor updates in v3.09 and the more substantial v3.08 update (straight lines).

Updating your reMarkable software brings the latest features to a powerful device

Cloud Archive Feature

reMarkable archive function to move documents to cloud storage

reMarkable added the ability to archive documents to the cloud, reducing the files stored on the device. This new feature is designed to leverage the unlimited storage capacity of reMarkable Connect (backended in Google Cloud), while better utilizing the limited 8GB onboard storage.

To access Archive, long press a document from the main screen and then select the new icon ‘Archive.’ This will delete the document from the device, but keep a copy in the same folder in the cloud. This can be really useful to cleanse your reMarkable of documents you aren’t actively using, but want to retain a copy of.

reMarkable Search Update

The reMarkable search function has been notoriously underpowered for some time (documented in this article). So, it’s great to see that reMarkable is investing in updating this core functionality. The update brings the ability to filter documents & notebooks alphabetically or by date of last update.

Updates to the reMarkable Desktop App

While not on the tablet, the v3.10 update also impacted the desktop app by adding the ability to perform handwriting conversion on your computer. The process is the same (and seems to have the same level of sensitivity to symbols & formatting) as on the tablet.

I’m glad to see reMarkable adding functionality to the reMarkable desktop app, as its an easy way to modify and update notes that were taken on the tablet.

Drawer function for Type Folio

reMarkable added a new navigation feature for Type Folio users (detailed review of the Type Folio here). This new feature makes it easier to navigate between notes from the Type Folio keyboard. You simply press CTRL + Tab (arrow to the left) to open the new Drawer feature. From here, you can navigate between the most recent 10 notebooks or documents you’ve accessed. Use the arrow keys to navigate to the document you’re looking for.

The Drawer feature also provides a second list of notebooks, Favorites. This is actually pretty revolutionary, if you have a couple of notebooks that you regularly access.

Other minor reMarkable 2 software updates

reMarkable also updated the selection tool handwriting conversion workflow. Instead of the old method of having to paste the converted text, the reMarkable now replaces the text inline. This is a very logical update that reduces the number of steps to perform a straightforward function.

The reMarkable tablet allows you to handwrite documents to fully customize them to your needs, just like paper (but better)

Review of new reMarkable features

By far the most impactful change is the drawer feature for the Type Folio. Most business people are very familiar with transitioning between apps on a laptop with the CRTL + Tab sequence, so reMarkable’s method is very natural. I think this will actually cause me to use the Type Folio more often.

The other updates are incremental, but continue to show how the reMarkable team continue to invest in the software on the current reMarkable 2 (though hopefully they are also working on a reMarkable 3).
