In January 2023, reMarkable introduced their v3.9 software update, bringing a handful of primarily cosmetic refinements to the paper tablet.

What was in the reMarkable v3.9 update?

Improved palm rejection for lefties

v3.9 software update for the reMarkable 2 paper tablet brings new fonts, better support for lefties, and improved menus

As a leftie, this is the most important feature update in reMarkable software v3.9 (to me anyways). Since the orientation of a leftie’s hand is opposite to a rightie, the menus have always been reversed. But previously, there were still some bugs with my hand causing the note to close accidently.

The v3.9 update seems to have fixed (or at least improved) the accidentally note closing issue. As a daily user of the reMarkable for consulting and general business use, I’m a big fan of reliability improvements.

Pro tip: if you want to change the orientation of your reMarkable menus, navigate to Menu >> Settings >> Accessibility (more on that in our article on the meaning of the reMarkable icons).

Changes to the title font

reMarkable updated the font for titles to a custom Serif font in an effort to “add a dash of style.” You’ll likely only notice this update if you’re using the Type Folio typing capability (or potentially if you create typed titles to hand write around).

This is obviously a cosmetic update and doesn’t provide any additional functionality to the device.

Update: upon further testing, you can also see the new font if you use the onscreen keyboard or use handwriting conversion (and then update the line to title)

Reorganized reMarkable menus

reMarkable decided to simplify the language and visual structure of the menus for the device. I like that they combined language and keyboard settings into one place (makes a ton of sense). This update should be really helpful for new reMarkable users who are still getting used to the device.

The update also added the ability to easily toggle between Mac and PC style shortcuts on the Type Folio.

Updated reMarkable Desktop App

The new device software update also came along with an update to the software for the reMarkable desktop app. This is great news, because it allows you to interact with some of the new device-level features introduced in v3.8 (like checkboxes and the selection tools)

Thoughts on v3.9 update

Overall, this is a minor update to the reMarkable. The visual updates are apprecaited, but by no means game changers. That said, it’s still great to see the reMarkable team continuing to update on the current main version of the software.

How do I get the reMarkable v3.9 software update?

If your device hasn’t updated to the newest version, you need to make sure that you’re connected to WiFi, and then navigate to Menu >> Settings >> Software Version >> Check for Updates
