The Staedtler Noris Digital Jumbo is an excellent replacement or alternative for the reMarkable 2 Marker.  If you use the reMarkable 2 paper tablet for work, you should absolutely consider the Staedtler Noris Digital Jumbo as a backup stylus or as a replacement for a broken or lost Marker Plus. Just like the reMarkable Marker & Marker Plus – the Noris Digital Jumbo uses EMR (which is fully compatible with the reMarkable 2).

Staedtler Noris Digital Jumbo 180J 22 for the reMarkable 2

Experience writing with the Noris digital Jumbo 180J 22

Writing with the Noris digital jumbo is an absolute pleasure.  The triangular shape of the pencil is comfortable to hold and really allows detailed control of the writing end.  The nib or tip is slightly smaller than the standard Marker, resulting in a finer line (which I appreciate for note taking), though with a bit less resistance than the Marker. The reMarkable 2 picks up the writing from the Jumbo just as well as the OEM stylus. The eraser also works equally well to the Marker Plus.

Comparison to the reMarkable 2 Marker Plus

The Staedtler Noris Digital Jumbo is noticeably lighter than the reMarkable Marker Plus.  Both pencils write very well on the reMarkable 2 paper tablet and the erasers also work similarly well.  But there are a couple points of differentiation:

Who is Staedtler?

Staedtler is a famous German writing utensil manufacturer.  They’ve been making pencils since the 17th century (seriously) and have invented many of features that define modern writing utencils.  When I was an Army officer, Staedtler map markers were the absolute gold standard for writing utensils on US Government 1:50,000 maps (or battle boards).  Since those days, I’ve known admired the Staedtler brand.

What is an EMR Stylus and why does it work?

EMR stands for Electro-Magnetic Resonance and is how modern writing tablets interpret stylus movement through a combination of location and pressure. The EMR system consists of a series of wires underlaid behind the screen and a specially configured EMR pen (also called EMR Pencil or EMR Stylus). These wires emit EM waves, which are received by the stylus. The stylus uses the electromagnetic power to re-send location, pressure, and tilt information back to the tablet to record the text / picture. This means that any EMR stylus that’s properly designed will work with the reMarkable paper tablet. Just like this review, we’ll continue testing other models to ensure they work.

Summary of Staedtler Noris Digital Jumbo Review

I highly recommend the Staedtler Noris Digital Jumbo as an affordable replacement to the reMarkable Marker Plus, especially for those who need / want a finer point on their pencil. It’s worth noting that this stylus also has a replacable nib / tip – we wrote an article about how to do so here.
